Part of the Shenandoah Valley Campaigns of 1864, the Battle of New Market saw a smaller Confederate army under Maj. Gen. John C. Breckinridge defeat a larger Union force led by Maj. Gen. Franz Sigel in New Market, Virginia.  The Battle of New Market is best remembered for the role played by the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) corps of 257 cadets, ranging in age from fifteen to twenty-five, in achieving the victory for the South.
