Description

In September 1940, Fort Bliss, Texas was the station for the 1st Cavalry Division, a horseback mounted military unit, still in action. Then on September 20, a new unit arrived at the local railroad siding that would dramatically revise the post mission for the next sixty plus years.
The 202nd Coast Artillery Regiment/antiaircraft was the first of many antiaircraft and Air Defense Artillery units that followed at Fort Bliss. The weather in the area had made the Tularosa Valley just north of the post ideal since almost year around good weather and the vacant and safe haven it offered was vast, thus ideal for maneuvers with down range requirements for air defense weapons that needed wide open spaces.
Almost seventy years of air defense training on Fort Bliss followed with Air Defense Artillery Center testing and training the dominate use of the post until 2005, when the Department of Defense (DoD) chose to move the Center and School to Fort Sill, Oklahoma.
