Description

This battle history is part of a regular series produced by the U.S. Marine Corps History Division. The Battle of An-Nasiriyah was the first large-scale battle of Operation Iraqi Freedom, involving 5,800 U.S. Marines and U.S. Navy Corpsmen. This history is based largely on extensive interviews with the commanding officers, including Brig. Gen. Richard F. Natonski. Extensive use of battlefront images and maps trace the campaign to secure the town quickly before Iraqi forces could destroy key bridges and slow further advances. The text explores preparation and planning, the march into the city, the “asymmetrical nature of the enemy” in an urban battlefield, and consolidation and rescue. The author traces the many lessons learned, including the “effectiveness of joint planning and execution” the need for advance intelligence, and the ability of Coalition forces “to react quickly and aggressively against unexpected enemy tactics.”
