Description

Fourth in the Civil War series of campaign brochures commemorating our national sacrifices during the American Civil War, The Vicksburg Campaign, November 1862-July 1863 describes the series of maneuvers and battles in the Western Theater of the American Civil War directed against Vicksburg, Mississippi. It was a fortress city that dominated the last Confederate-controlled section of the Mississippi River and was vital to cutting off the South. Said Abraham Lincoln: "Vicksburg is the key. The war can never be brought to a close until that key is in our pocket."

The Union Army of the Tennessee under Major General Ulysses S. Grant gained control of the river by capturing the Vicksburg stronghold and defeating Lt. Gen. John C. Pemberton's forces stationed there.  The campaign consisted of many important naval operations, troop maneuvers, failed initiatives, a siege, and eleven distinct battles starting in November 1862 and ending on July 4, 1863.

This booklet by Christopher R. Gabel provides some essential background to Civil War historians, military personnel and even tourists to the Vicksburg battlefield who want more information about this important campaign, and includes numerous maps, photos and illustrations.

This brochure is #4 in "The U.S. Army Campaigns of the Civil War" series by the Army Center of Military History
