Description

Written by famed Air Force historian, Robert L. Perry, this contains the recently declassified histories of two of the National Reconnaissance Office’s (NRO) most secret and successful early satellite imagery systems, Gambit and Hexagon. The United States developed the Air Force’s Gambit satellite program and the CIA’s Hexagon programs in the 1960’s and 70’s to improve the nation’s means for peering over the iron curtain that separated western democracies from east European and Asian communist countries.

Perry’s work captures the difficulties associated with the development of early national reconnaissance systems, and more importantly, the strategies for meeting those challenges. Readers will come away with insight into the technological opportunities presented by pursing both programs, the organizational tension that arose between the Air Force and CIA because of competing approaches for imagery satellites, and the force that human determination is for dealing with unknowns and set-backs that are hallmarks of efforts to acquire large, sophisticated technological systems.

Full color photographs and illustrations throughout. Center for the Study of National Reconnaissance Classics. Originally publihed in November 1973, declassified September 17, 2011. Includes a preface by James D. Outzen.
