Description

Describes the the Battle of Antietam (also known as the Battle of Sharpsburg) which was fought on September 17, 1862, near Sharpsburg, Maryland and Antietam Creek in the remote Washington, DC area suburbs.

Part of the Maryland Campaign, the Battle of Antietam was the first major battle in the American Civil War to take place on Union soil, with nearly 70,000 Federal troops and approximately 35,000 Confederates actually engaged in the battle. It is the bloodiest single-day battle in American history, with 22,717 dead, wounded, and missing on both sides combined.  It is also infamous because of poor leadership by the Union general: despite having superiority of numbers in his Union forces, General McClellan's indecision allowed General Lee to withdraw his remaining Confederate troops to the safety of the Virginia shore.
