ABOUT THE AGENCY/AUTHOR:

The Children's Bureau is a 100-year-old Federal agency within the Administration on Children, Youth and Families, Administration for Children and Families, Department of Health and Human Services. The Bureau was created in 1912 “to investigate and report . . . upon all matters pertaining to the welfare of children and child life among all classes of our people.” Since that time, the Children's Bureau has moved about within different Federal agencies, and many of its responsibilities were spun off to other, newer agencies. These changes have allowed the Bureau to narrow its focus to serving children and families involved across the entire continuum of child welfare services, from prevention of child maltreatment to foster care and adoption. Today, the Children's Bureau provides guidance, develops policy, collects national statistics, monitors State child welfare services, and oversees funding for a wealth of child welfare programs.
